********* This Year's Theme **********
When a group of people is marginalized by society, those people will inevitably resist. Throughout history, deliberate efforts by such groups to mobilize against their oppression have built on each other over time into complex, critical movements for change. An issue Asian Americans must confront is the common perception that we are silent on political matters, especially those affecting queer communities and other people of color. But can we—especially as queer Asians in the U.S.—afford to turn away from the demonstrations against antiblackness in Ferguson, or efforts to prevent violence against trans women? It is our collective responsibility to address these injustices—especially as communities facing different but connected struggles. With the theme “AMPLIFY,” this year’s Queer and Asian Conference aims to foster a better understanding of the issues affecting marginalized communities, find ways to amplify our efforts to mobilize against inequality, and create lasting change.
In order to address these issues, it is necessary for us to analyze the roles we play in the world. How are queer and Asian bodies perceived and influenced by society in relation to other marginalized identities? How can we work with our communities to bring healing without being dismissive of the causes for our anger? How can we be supportive of each other and our differing needs—as friends, allies, and communities? By strengthening our understanding of these questions, we can develop tools to amplify our voices and create a world in which our communities thrive. Only by openly addressing these issues together and compounding each others’ efforts will we be able to become a force that shakes and dismantles the systems of oppression that hold us back. And through this process, we can begin to build a better reality for ourselves—together.
We, the planning committee for the Queer and Asian Conference 2015, invite you to explore what it means to AMPLIFY our collective power to create change. We hope that this conference can be a space for attendees to come together to build communities, skills, knowledge, and meaningful insight from their experiences.
